Mitsubishi to Test and Build Humanoid Robots for Manufacturing

Mitsubishi Motors and robotics startup Highlanders have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop humanoid robots for manufacturing applications and explore large-scale production of the robots at Mitsubishi Motors’ Kyoto Plant.

Testing Robots on the Factory Floor

As an initial step, Mitsubishi Motors plans to deploy Highlanders’ humanoid robots within its own manufacturing facilities. The automaker said the pilot program will allow it to collect operational data, evaluate robotic performance in production environments, and build expertise in humanoid robotics.

The companies said the effort is intended to support manufacturing operations while identifying opportunities for future robot development and deployment.

Evaluating Mass Production

In addition to testing the robots in its factories, Mitsubishi Motors will explore manufacturing Highlanders’ humanoid robots using currently unused buildings at its Kyoto Plant. The companies will assess the feasibility of beginning production in early 2027.

Mitsubishi Motors plans to apply its experience in mass production, quality assurance, safety engineering, mechatronics, and factory operations to support the manufacturing program.

Addressing Manufacturing Workforce Challenges

According to the companies, the project is believed to be the first collaboration between an automotive manufacturer and a humanoid robotics developer focused on both factory deployment and large-scale robot production.

Mitsubishi Motors has already invested in Highlanders and said it intends to make additional investments as the collaboration advances. The companies aim to develop manufacturing systems in which humans and humanoid robots work together to improve productivity and industrial competitiveness.
